Al Maqta’a Museum Opens To Public, Showcasing Abu Dhabi's Rich Cultural Heritage
Al Maqta’a Museum has been inaugurated by Abu Dhabi Police and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi). This initiative involved forming a committee to establish the museum. The site underwent complete restoration, highlighting Abu Dhabi's dedication to preserving its cultural heritage.
The museum offers visitors a chance to explore significant cultural landmarks in the capital, such as Al Maqta’a Tower, Al Maqta’a Building, and Al Maqta’a Bridge. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman at DCT Abu Dhabi, remarked on the museum's significance: "Al Maqta’a Museum tells the story of Abu Dhabi’s rich cultural heritage, rooted in centuries of trade, resilience, and community. This historic site stands as a powerful symbol of how the emirate has evolved from a cross-cultural trading post into a thriving modern capital, bridging the past and present."

The museum commemorates 230 years since Al Maqta'a Tower was built. It highlights its historical defensive role in safeguarding access to Abu Dhabi Island. Colonel Pilot Sheikh Zayed bin Hamad Al Nahyan, Head of the Al Maqta’a Museum Project Committee, stated that under President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's guidance, H.H. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan inaugurated the museum.
Visitors can learn about the area's history starting with Sheikh Dhiyab bin Isa Al Nahyan’s horsemen discovering the island in 1761 while tracking gazelles. This discovery led to relocating the capital from Al Dhafra to Abu Dhabi Island in 1793 under Sheikh Shakhbut bin Dhiyab Al Nahyan.
The museum showcases traditional crossing methods during low tides and features a stone causeway ordered by Sheikh Shakhbut bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1953. It also highlights a sustainable bridge built by UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, in 1969. Exhibits include customs, police roles, immigration at Maqta'a, artifacts, and oral histories recounting the area’s past.
The outdoor space is designed to simulate crossing Al Maqta’a Creek over time—from early tidal crossings to constructing the stone causeway and both phases of bridge development. This setup provides an immersive experience for visitors interested in understanding historical transitions.
Cultural Heritage Preservation
Al Maqta’a Museum serves as a living link between heritage and modernity. It offers insights into the emirate’s journey from early settlement to today’s dynamic society. The re-opening celebrates protection and service legacies on Abu Dhabi Island while recognising Abu Dhabi Police's strategic role over half a century.
The museum is open throughout the week for public visits. It invites people to delve into historical evolution through its engaging exhibits. This initiative underscores Abu Dhabi's commitment to promoting its rich cultural legacy while embracing modern advancements.
