Beyond2020 Initiative Launches AI-Powered Mammography In Costa Rica For Breast Cancer Care
The Zayed Sustainability Prize has recently unveiled its flagship initiative, Beyond2020, with a pioneering project in Costa Rica aimed at enhancing breast cancer detection and treatment among women in underprivileged communities. This initiative is set to revolutionize healthcare access by providing AI-powered mammography services, with an ambitious goal of conducting 8,000 tests annually. The initiative's primary deployment has taken place at the Juan Pablo II Medical Centre in Cartago, with future expansions planned to broaden its reach.
At the heart of this initiative is Mamotest, the 2022 Zayed Sustainability Prize winner. This Argentina-based health-tech SME is recognized as Latin America's first tele-mammography network and has significantly contributed to healthcare by offering low-cost services to over 750,000 patients while also raising awareness about breast cancer across the region. The deployment of Mamotest's services in Costa Rica represents a critical step forward in the UAE's global humanitarian efforts, aiming to uplift women in remote and economically disadvantaged communities.

Breast cancer remains a pressing health issue in Costa Rica, with 1,344 new cases and 423 deaths reported in 2022 alone. Disparities in detection rates and treatment accessibility between communities highlight the urgent need for initiatives like Beyond2020. By leveraging artificial intelligence, Mamotest's platform enhances the accuracy of early-stage detection, surpassing traditional methods often limited by human error.
The Beyond2020 initiative not only focuses on deploying advanced medical technologies but also emphasizes the importance of reaching underserved areas. A mobile unit operated by CENRAD has been introduced to extend these critical healthcare services to rural regions lacking in resources. This strategic move aims to bridge the gap in health equity, ensuring that women from all backgrounds have access to quality care and early detection facilities.
The broader impact of Beyond2020 is evident through its comprehensive approach to sustainability and healthcare. To date, the initiative has successfully implemented 18 deployments across various sectors including energy, health, water, and food. These projects have collectively impacted over 229,800 individuals in countries such as Nepal, Tanzania, Uganda, and Jordan. With plans underway for future deployments in India and Colombia, Beyond2020 continues to embody the Zayed Sustainability Prize's commitment to fostering sustainable development and improving lives globally.
Through initiatives like Beyond2020, the Zayed Sustainability Prize is making significant strides towards a more equitable world where access to healthcare is not determined by geographical or economic barriers. By integrating advanced technologies such as AI into healthcare services, the initiative is setting a new standard for preventive care and early detection strategies. As Beyond2020 expands its reach, it promises to build stronger communities armed with the knowledge and resources needed to combat breast cancer effectively.
