ADIPEC 2024: Global Leaders Call For Innovation And Collaboration In Energy Transformation
ADIPEC 2024 commenced, celebrating four decades of energy leadership by bringing together global leaders under the theme "Connecting Minds. Transforming Energy." Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC Managing Director and Group CEO, delivered the opening speech. He urged the energy sector to guide the world towards sustainable economic growth by leveraging global megatrends.
The event is taking place in Abu Dhabi from 4-7 November, expecting over 184,000 attendees. More than 40 ministers and 200 global executives will join over 1,800 speakers in more than 370 conference sessions. These discussions will focus on key energy transition priorities, highlighting the importance of embracing solutions like artificial intelligence to foster global sustainability.

The first Ministerial Panel at ADIPEC, titled ‘The new global leaders and the energy transition,’ highlighted policy roles and cross-border cooperation in shaping energy transitions. Suhail Al Mazrouei, UAE's Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, stated: "Our leaders in the UAE have always thought of the future, and we are committed to investing in more energy resources to ensure adequate supply."
Insights were shared by Hardeep S Puri from India, Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu from Uganda, and Karim Badawi from Egypt. They discussed expanding access to climate technologies through international collaboration. The panel emphasised policy's role in driving change and enhancing access to innovative climate solutions.
Private sector leaders addressed challenges of balancing business goals with rising energy consumption amid climate change realities. In a session titled ‘Meeting escalating global energy demand whilst transitioning to a low carbon energy system,’ top executives shared their perspectives. Murray Auchincloss from bp and Wael Sawan from Shell were among those who spoke.
Wael Sawan stated: "We fundamentally believe that the world needs much more energy, and specifically more diversified forms of energy." He emphasised Shell's commitment to decarbonising existing assets as a crucial step in their operations' transformation process.
Finance Conference Highlights Investment Needs
The Finance and Investment Conference provided a platform for discussing capital flow disparities needed for equitable transitions. Reinhard Florey from OMV summarised: "There are specific energy solutions for which we need capital... It takes a lot of specialist know-how to make the technology work." The panel stressed building infrastructure networks with lender support.
AI was a major focus at ADIPEC 2024 with an all-new AI Zone showcasing technology's potential to revolutionise energy systems. Experts demonstrated AI's role in enhancing grid resilience and unlocking investment opportunities. ADIPEC continues its legacy of fostering innovation for sustainable progress in global energy transitions.
International organisations contributed significantly on day one by sharing experiences in global cooperation and diplomacy. Brian Sullivan from IPIECA remarked: "Our industry has the skills...to address issues surrounding the energy transition." He highlighted integrating sustainable development with enhanced environmental performance as essential goals.
