Abu Dhabi Strengthens Economic And Trade Relations With Western Australia
The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) has recently embarked on a strategic partnership with Western Australia's Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation, aiming to foster growth in areas of mutual economic interest. This collaboration is a testament to ADIO's commitment to enhancing private sector opportunities by strengthening ties with Australia.
Both entities are set to explore cooperation within the framework of Western Australia's Diversify WA Strategy and ADIO's Strategic Clusters. This agreement is poised to facilitate cross-sector activities, encompassing supply chain development, advanced manufacturing, science innovation and technology, as well as environmental, social, and governance frameworks.

Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, highlighting its potential to bolster trade relations between Abu Dhabi and Western Australia. He emphasized the opportunities this collaboration would offer Australian companies to expand into Abu Dhabi and other markets in the region. Similarly, Emirati companies are expected to benefit from enhanced access to Australian markets and its surrounding areas.
Hon Reece Whitby, Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Action, reiterated the significance of economic ties between the UAE and Australia. He pointed out that this agreement exemplifies the strong working relationship between the State Government of Western Australia and ADIO. Whitby assured continued efforts to identify cooperative ventures that promise mutual economic benefits.
The economic relationship between the UAE and Australia is robust, with the UAE standing as Australia's largest Middle East trade and investment partner. The bilateral trade of goods and services between the two nations reached US$9.3bn in 2022. The commencement of talks for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2023 further underscores their commitment to deepening economic ties.
With nearly 16,000 Australian expatriates residing in the UAE, the connection between these two regions extends beyond mere economic transactions. Western Australia, known for its export-oriented economy, contributes significantly to Australia's exports of goods each year. Its gross state product (GSP) amounted to AUD445.3bn in 2022-23, accounting for 17.4% of Australia's gross domestic product (GDP).
This partnership between ADIO and Western Australia's Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation is set to open new avenues for economic cooperation and development. By leveraging their respective strengths, both parties aim to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for their regions.
