Abu Dhabi's Integrated Transport Centre Unveils 2024 Guidelines For Transport Impact Studies
The Integrated Transport Centre, part of Abu Dhabi's Department of Municipalities and Transport, has unveiled the 2024 Abu Dhabi Transport Impact Studies Guidelines. This initiative aims to boost urban planning efficiency and foster a sustainable transport system. Developed with input from various municipalities and developers, these guidelines mark a significant advancement in evaluating traffic impacts of new developments.
The updated guidelines introduce technical standards and innovative analysis methods. These aim to improve project assessment accuracy and determine their impact on Abu Dhabi's transport network. They ensure the implementation of effective transport projects that support sustainability and align with the emirate’s development goals.

Among the key standards is an expanded evaluation scope for various project types, considering potential traffic impacts on infrastructure. This enhances projection accuracy regarding how projects affect the road network. The guidelines also incorporate advanced modelling techniques like traffic simulation models and strategic assessments using STEAM+ systems.
Urban design standards prioritise pedestrians, public transport, and cycling to support sustainable mobility and enhance traffic flow. The guidelines also update study submission procedures, improving mechanisms for submitting and reviewing studies by Abu Dhabi Mobility to expedite approvals.
The guidelines empower developers to conduct precise traffic studies, ensuring new projects align with existing infrastructure and meet urban expansion needs. They play a crucial role in Abu Dhabi’s sustainability initiatives by reducing carbon emissions and creating safer urban spaces.
Abdullah Hamad Al Ariani, Acting Executive Director of Planning at Abu Dhabi Mobility, stated: "These guidelines represent a significant step forward in enhancing the efficiency of Abu Dhabi’s transport network. They provide an integrated framework for evaluating the impact of development projects, ensuring sustainable urban growth and effective traffic management."
Workshops for Stakeholders
To support guideline implementation, workshops will be organised for stakeholders including municipalities like Abu Dhabi Municipality, Al Ain Municipality, and Al Dhafra Municipality. Consultants and developers will also participate to ensure effective compliance with the updated guide.
The guidelines help identify planning requirements and offer detailed guidance on preparing transport impact studies. This includes steps for data collection, analysis, evaluation timeframes, and traffic flow forecast models.
By incorporating safety standards and considering environmental impacts, these guidelines provide innovative solutions for comprehensive mobility management. They ensure projects adhere to safety norms while promoting sustainable urban growth in line with Abu Dhabi’s development requirements.
