Abu Dhabi Police Participate In The 8th UN Global Road Safety Week To Promote Safe Crossing

The General Command of Abu Dhabi Police is actively participating in the 8th United Nations Global Road Safety Week. This initiative, themed "#MakeWalkingSafe #MakeCyclingSafe," underscores their dedication to fostering a culture of safe crossing for both drivers and pedestrians. The campaign aims to reduce accidents and enhance traffic safety by promoting safer urban infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

Brigadier General Mahmoud Youssef Al Baloushi, Director of the Directorate of Traffic and Security Patrols, highlighted the importance of pedestrian and cyclist safety as a strategic priority for Abu Dhabi Police. He urged pedestrians to use designated crossing areas like bridges, tunnels, and crossings with traffic signals. Avoiding distractions such as mobile phones while walking is also crucial.

The UN-WHO global campaign calls on governments and communities to implement effective measures to decrease road traffic injuries and fatalities. It addresses the increasing number of deaths and injuries due to unsafe road conditions and motorist behaviours. The initiative seeks to create safer environments for walking and cycling.

Brigadier General Al Baloushi emphasised that compliance with traffic laws is a shared responsibility that safeguards lives and enhances community security. He encouraged drivers to prioritise pedestrian rights, especially near schools and residential areas, as this reflects a driver's awareness and civilised commitment.

Efforts are ongoing to spread awareness through field campaigns and digital platforms. Modern technologies are being utilised to increase traffic awareness among all community members. Joint cooperation in adopting correct traffic behaviours is essential for achieving positive results that contribute to community safety.

The eighth UN Global Road Safety Week coincides with the current Decade of Action for Road Safety. It follows the endorsement of the 2025 Marrakech Declaration during the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety. This declaration reinforced countries’ commitment to making walking and cycling safe for everyone.

The Abu Dhabi Police's participation in this global event highlights their proactive approach towards road safety. By focusing on education and infrastructure improvements, they aim to significantly reduce road accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists.
