ISAM Praises Abu Dhabi's New Law Enhancing Rehabilitation And Correctional Centres
The International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM) recently lauded the enactment of a new law by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aimed at regulating rehabilitation and correctional facilities in Abu Dhabi. This legislative move, which saw the transition of management for these establishments from the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters to the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department since January, has been met with widespread approval.
Dr. Hamad Al Ghafri, President of ISAM, expressed his admiration for the comprehensive nature of the law, noting its consistency with the UAE's dedication to upholding human rights and humanitarian principles. The law's emphasis on providing thorough care and support to individuals within rehabilitation centres was particularly highlighted by Dr. Al Ghafri as a testament to the UAE's commitment to these values.

This legislative development marks a significant step in enhancing the UAE's reputation on the global stage regarding human rights issues. Dr. Al Ghafri pointed out that the UAE has taken a proactive stance in addressing human rights concerns, including those related to drug addiction, through the establishment of specialized centres and the implementation of inclusive policies.
The roles of these centres have been expanded to encompass health and social care services for inmates, alongside offering educational and professional training opportunities. Furthermore, these establishments are tasked with delivering rehabilitation programmes designed to reintegrate inmates back into society as productive members.
Dr. Al Ghafri's comments underscore the UAE's ongoing efforts to improve its human rights record and provide a supportive environment for all individuals, particularly those undergoing rehabilitation. This legislative initiative is seen as a major milestone in the country's commitment to human rights and humanitarian values.
