Abu Dhabi Festival Strengthens UAE's Cultural Diplomacy Through Events In The United States

The Abu Dhabi Festival Abroad programme, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, continued its cultural diplomacy mission in November. This initiative featured concerts and discussions across the United States, aiming to promote Emirati culture globally.

Three main events highlighted the programme. The American premiere of "Shams Wujoudi" by composer Faraj Abyad took place at New York's Peter Jay Sharp Theatre. Additionally, Carnegie Hall hosted the world premiere of the opera "A Journey to the New World," performed by the Reina Sofía School of Music Symphony Orchestra with Emirati cellist Elham Al Marzooqi.

UAE's Cultural Presence Enhanced by Abu Dhabi Festival

Huda Ibrahim Al Khamis, Founder of the Abu Dhabi Music and Arts Foundation, emphasised the festival's dedication to international partnerships. She stated that these collaborations showcase Emirati talent on global platforms. The festival's presentation of Abyad’s work in the U.S. and the Carnegie Hall debut of the Reina Sofía School of Music Symphony Orchestra exemplify this commitment.

Abyad’s performance in New York uniquely combined Eastern maqams with Western orchestration. This blend reimagined Syrian folkloric works and muwashahat, accompanied by visual artworks from the Barjeel Art Foundation. The concert also introduced audiences to the Athar Orchestra, a New York-based ensemble.

The programme included two Arts in Embassies discussions titled "Music as a Bridge." These sessions took place in New York on 14th November and Washington, D.C., on 18th November. Artists such as Elham Al Marzooqi, Faraj Abyad, and Kinan Azmeh participated in these dialogues exploring music's role in fostering cultural understanding.

Promoting Cultural Diplomacy

The second discussion in Washington featured Al Marzooqi, Abyad, and Kate Seely from the Middle East Institute. These conversations highlighted how music can enhance shared creativity and cultural exchange between nations.

The Abu Dhabi Festival Abroad programme continues to advance UAE’s creative presence internationally through its global initiatives. By promoting cultural exchange, it strengthens ties between different cultures and showcases Emirati artistry worldwide.
