Abu Dhabi Department Of Energy Rolls Out Plans To Slash Electricity And Water Consumption

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has introduced several initiatives to promote reduced electricity and water usage among community members. These efforts are part of Abu Dhabi's broader strategy to achieve the UAE's 2050 net zero goals. The focus is on educating the younger generation through school and household programmes to foster sustainability and conservation.

Education plays a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable future, which is a primary objective for the DoE. By targeting students, the initiatives aim to extend their impact to the wider community. Engaging the next generation in action-based learning helps instil environmental awareness and sustainable practices that can be carried forward.

DoE's New Plans for Less Consumption

Ahmed Juma Al Falasi, Acting Executive Director of Energy Efficiency Sector at DoE, stated, "Our new initiatives aim to educate and empower individuals, creating a society that is highly aware of the importance of rationalising electricity and water consumption and how to conserve them." He emphasised that these educational efforts will inspire generations to adopt sustainable habits and reduce carbon emissions.

The Abu Dhabi Demand Side Management and Energy Rationalisation Strategy 2030 aims for significant reductions in resource consumption. The goal is to cut electricity use by 22 percent and water use by 32 percent by 2030. Various programmes under this strategy are managed by different entities but overseen by the DoE. A key component is the Behavioural Change programme, which enhances policy effectiveness by promoting energy- and water-efficient practices within the community.

In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK), nearly 2,000 students received efficiency kits through the Children's Kit initiative. These kits, designed for children aged 6 to 9 years old and 10 to 13 years old, include guides on sustainable living along with practical tools like water-efficient showerheads and solar-powered chargers.

Interactive Learning Tools

The DoE has also launched "EnergiX," a gamified learning tool available on Apple and Android devices globally. This interactive game educates children and their parents about energy and water conservation through engaging gameplay. By offering practical ways for children to start conserving resources, "EnergiX" teaches valuable lessons in an enjoyable manner.

By focusing on education and behavioural change, these initiatives aim to create a more sustainable community in Abu Dhabi. The long-term goal is for individuals to adopt these practices throughout their lives, passing them on to future generations.

The comprehensive approach taken by the DoE underscores its commitment to reducing resource consumption while fostering a culture of sustainability among Abu Dhabi's residents.
