Abu Dhabi Customs Hosts World Customs Organisation Study Mission On Blockchain Technology For Global Trade Enhancement
Abu Dhabi Customs recently hosted the World Customs Organisation's (WCO) inaugural study mission in Abu Dhabi. This event was part of the "Smart Customs" initiative, focusing on developing the "Invisible Customs" ecosystem and leveraging blockchain technology to simplify customs processes and enhance global trade.
The WCO delegation assessed Abu Dhabi Customs' digital transformation strategy over five days. They examined the innovative "Invisible Customs" concept and how advanced technologies, especially blockchain, are being adopted. The evaluation aimed to see how these initiatives align with strategic goals and elevate Abu Dhabi Customs to a world-class status.

Rashed Lahej Al Mansoori, Director-General of Abu Dhabi Customs, expressed strong support for this mission. He highlighted the significance of exchanging innovative experiences and best practices among customs administrations globally. According to him, such cooperation strengthens cross-border trade and supports supply chains amid rapidly changing global dynamics.
The mission also explored expanding blockchain use within customs operations. The team reviewed Abu Dhabi Customs' efforts to apply blockchain across various areas, including e-commerce and creating a "Trusted Digital Trade Corridor." These initiatives aim to provide a sustainable digital infrastructure that enhances operational efficiency.
A field visit to a logistics facility at the Abu Dhabi Airport Free Zone was conducted during the mission. This visit aimed to evaluate blockchain's practical applications in cross-border e-commerce. The team explored how blockchain-powered systems can streamline data management and deliver seamless digital services for businesses.
The WCO delegation evaluated "Trade Chain," a blockchain-based platform developed by Abu Dhabi Customs. This platform enables instant transaction processing and offers end-to-end visibility across supply chains. It is a key component of Abu Dhabi's strategy to position itself as a leader in customs technology.
Based on the mission's findings, the WCO plans to publish a detailed case study showcasing Abu Dhabi Customs' experience with blockchain technology. This case study will be featured on the upcoming Smart Customs Community Portal and contribute to an updated report on transformative technologies in customs.
The mission underscored opportunities for collaboration in adopting advanced technologies like blockchain. By sharing best practices, customs administrations worldwide can enhance their operations, supporting more efficient global trade processes while adapting to evolving challenges.
