Abdulla Balalaa Emphasises UAE's Leadership In Climate Action At COP29
The 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, featured a significant focus on climate, peace, relief, and recovery. A delegation from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively engaged in various key events during this thematic day. These efforts aimed to build upon the legacy established by COP28, which was the first to dedicate a day specifically to these topics.
Abdulla Balalaa, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Energy and Sustainability, participated in a high-level ministerial event hosted by Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. This event announced the Baku Call and the Baku Hub as mechanisms for implementing climate action for peace, relief, and recovery. The gathering included ministers from multiple regions and representatives from international organizations.

The UAE’s leadership was underscored with the launch of its COP28 Declaration on Climate, Relief, Recovery, and Peace. This declaration received endorsement from 94 countries and 43 organizations. Balalaa highlighted that both the Baku Hub and Baku Call are pivotal steps forward in supporting climate action in vulnerable nations. He emphasized that these initiatives build on outcomes from COP28 and previous conferences.
Balalaa also pointed out the unequal access to crucial financial resources for those most in need. He noted that this disparity exacerbates existing gaps between countries. His comments reflect ongoing concerns about financial inequities impacting climate action efforts globally.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs took part in a panel organized by the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy (AGDA) at the UAE Pavilion. This panel focused on accelerating climate action amidst complex challenges related to climate, peace, and security. It also reviewed progress since COP28 and discussed strategies leading up to COP30.
The event served as an opportunity to reinforce commitments made during COP28 while setting a path forward for future conferences. The discussions aimed at addressing multifaceted issues that intertwine environmental sustainability with global peace efforts.
Overall, these engagements highlight the UAE’s proactive role in fostering international cooperation on climate-related issues. By participating in such initiatives, they aim to drive meaningful change and support vulnerable communities worldwide.
