8th International Symposium On Radiological Protection Commences In Abu Dhabi With Global Experts

The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has announced the commencement of the 8th International Symposium on the System of Radiological Protection in Abu Dhabi. This event, organised with the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), spans three days and attracts over 500 experts from 53 nations. It is one of the largest gatherings focused on radiological protection worldwide.

Ambassador Hamad Al Kaabi, UAE Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Deputy Chairman of FANR, stated, "Hosting this symposium in Abu Dhabi reflects the UAE’s strong commitment to international cooperation in advancing radiological protection. At a time when technologies such as artificial intelligence, proton therapy, and space applications are rapidly advancing, our shared responsibility is to ensure they are harnessed safely, guided by integrity and sustainability, and always with public trust at the core."

International Symposium on Radiological Protection Begins

This symposium marks the second occasion that the UAE has hosted this significant event. The theme "Advancing Radiological Protection: Innovation, Integrity and Sustainability" underscores its focus. Discussions will cover medical applications like proton therapies and trends in radiotherapy. The role of artificial intelligence in radiological protection is also a key topic.

Werner Rühm, Chair of ICRP, expressed gratitude towards FANR by saying, "We extend our heartfelt thanks to our FANR, whose partnership and generous support have made this symposium possible. With 28 sessions, ICRP 2025 will play a pivotal role in advancing global dialogue in support of reviewing and revising the System of Radiological Protection and developing the next set of General Recommendations."

The programme also delves into environmental protection by examining radiation's effects on ecosystems while improving monitoring techniques. Additionally, it addresses exposure monitoring across various contexts such as occupational settings and emergencies. Space exploration is another area of interest, focusing on assessing risks for astronauts.

The symposium features contributions from international bodies like IAEA, UNSCEAR, WHO, and OECD-NEA. These collaborations highlight the importance of global efforts in enhancing radiation safety measures. Such partnerships aim to strengthen frameworks not only within the UAE but also across the GCC region.

Recognising Future Leaders

A notable aspect of this event is the Cousins Award for Young Scientists and Professionals. This award recognises emerging leaders in radiation protection. Dedicated sessions aim to bolster radiological protection frameworks throughout the UAE and GCC countries.

The gathering serves as a platform for discussing innovative applications while ensuring safety remains paramount. As technologies evolve rapidly, maintaining public trust through integrity and sustainability becomes crucial. The symposium's discussions aim to guide these advancements responsibly.
