FAO Reports That 733 Million People Worldwide Experience Hunger Due To Conflicts And Economic Issues

The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has highlighted that 733 million people worldwide, or one in 11 individuals, experience hunger. This issue is mainly caused by conflicts, climate shocks, inequality, and economic downturns. The FAO also noted that over 2.8 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet.

Dominique Burgeon, Director of the FAO Liaison Office in Geneva, pointed out that global food production is sufficient to feed everyone. However, there are significant disparities in food distribution worldwide. He emphasised that the right to adequate food includes not only freedom from hunger but also access to safe and nutritious food.

FAO Highlights Global Hunger Crisis Affecting Millions

According to the FAO report released on its 79th anniversary on 16th October, approximately 148 million children under five are shorter than average for their age. Additionally, 45 million children are severely underweight for their height, and 890 million adults suffer from obesity.

Burgeon urged governments to integrate the right to food into agricultural and food system policies. He stressed the importance of ensuring equitable access to diverse, safe, nutritious, and affordable foods for vulnerable populations.

The international organisation called for global cooperation to guarantee safe and unobstructed access to humanitarian aid during crises. This is essential to meet food needs effectively. The FAO also encouraged businesses to positively impact the food environment by prioritising a variety of nutritious foods.

Businesses are urged to invest responsibly in sustainable agriculture while ensuring decent working conditions. Sharing innovative food technologies and creating accountable, transparent, and inclusive business models are also recommended actions.

The FAO's message underscores the need for a collective effort in addressing global hunger and malnutrition challenges. By focusing on equitable access and sustainable practices, it aims to create a healthier future for all.
